Why Did John Eat Locusts

#1 Postby kriss » Sun Oct 02, 2011 9:51 pm

Why Did John Eat Locusts

Matthew 3:4 "Now John wore a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey." [Mk 1:6]

The prophet John the Immerser ate locusts, yet Deut 14:19 says:
"And all winged insects are unclean for you; they shall not be eaten." (ESV)
"And all the teeming life with wings are unclean to you; they shall not be eaten." (NASB)
"All flying insects that swarm are unclean to you; do not eat them." (NIV)

The Mosaic Law was not yet nailed to the cross (Mt 5:17-19), so why was John eating locusts?

Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition
who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.

John would not have eaten them if they were unclean.imo.Deu has to be speaking of something else.

Lev 11:21 Yet these may ye eat of every flying creeping thing that goeth upon [all] four, which have legs above their feet, to leap withal upon the earth;

Lev 11:22 [Even] these of them ye may eat; the locust after his kind, and the bald locust after his kind, and the beetle after his kind, and the grasshopper after his kind.
Gal 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

God never saved His people FROM tribulation, but THROUGH tribulation.

The inheritance is not to them that believe, but to them that overcome.

In addition to locusts etc, being the exception there is a deeper application.

Just in my mind, locusts destroy EVERYTHING they come around.

Abbadon / the destroyer is a character we hear about but what exactly does he do and what exactly does he destroy ?

Just in my mind at least, I see the correlation of the voice in the wilderness devouring the works of the destroyer symbolically.

there had to be a reason for the record of him eating locusts specifically

Locusts are clean food --- related to grasshoppers and crickets. I was tempted to eat some once ---- but only after grilling them and chopping off their heads (I don't think I could eat anything staring at me on the way down). But, I never got around to it. I think with my sensitive stomach I fear they would be too rough going down. :sign10:

Now don't confuse a locust:

with those droning cicadas we hear in the summer time which people also call "locusts"

My interests: mathematics, astronomy, gnomonics, genealogy, science, and biblical prophecy. In short, everything my favorite theologian, Sir Isaac Newton, loved.
